    Tuesday, January 13th, 2009 is National Amber Alert Day.

    The Amber Alert is an extension of the Federal Emergency Alert System and is named after abduction victim Amber Hagerman that was abducted on this date.

    The week surrounding this date, January 11th - 17th, 1580 KGAL and our sister station 920 KSHO will air aired an extensive Public Service Advertising Campaign and a special Valley Talk designed to increase public awareness of the program.

    Joining KGAL Valley Talk Host Jim Willhight was Bill Johnstone, Executive Director of the Oregon Association of Broadcasters (tentative). We will discuss Radio and Television participation in the Amber Alert program.

    Lt. Steve Duvall from the Oregon State Police also joined us and discuss OSP's role as statewide Amber Alert Coordinator.

    Broadcast Engineer for McKenzie River Broadcasting in Eugene (KMGE, KKNU, Bob 105) Chris "Ichabod" Murray, Chair of the Oregon State Emergency Communications Committee also will stop by to talk about Amber Alert, and EAS (Emergency Alert system).

    This is the 15th annual event and is expected to draw 1200+ youngsters, parents, and community volunteers. Over the course of the past few years it has quickly become the highest attended and favorite event of the local Cub Scouts and their families.

    Picture an all night slumber party filled with games, competitions, sports activities, music, demonstrations, hobbies, cultural displays, spiritual emphasis, and lots and lots of FUN! Boys have an opportunity to develop interests and skills that may lead to hobbies and life long interests.

    The activities are continuous, ending with a giant pizza feast, and all night "G" rated movies played on projection screens placed throughout the building.
