Join us with the Corvallis Knights to Celebrate Pioneer's 60th Anniversary with Fireworks!

Vets, enlisted men and women and officers are being admitted FREE of charge.

Plus there is a food drive for Operation Home front to Support Area Military Families

Pioneer Telephone Cooperative, a staunch supporter of our troops, is celebrating its 60th year in business at a Corvallis Knights game this summer by sponsoring Military Appreciation & Fireworks Night on Saturday, June 19th at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State University.

First pitch is at 7:05 pm and the fireworks show starts shortly after the game's final out.
"We are thrilled to celebrate our 60th anniversary at the ballpark and look forward to enjoying our national pastime with our community and Pioneer family while showing our appreciation and respect for our armed forces and their families," said Pioneer Marketing Director Rob Knowles.

Prior to the event, Pioneer, the Knights, NewTalk 1580 KGAL / Unforgettable 920 KSHO and Operation Home front will be promoting a food drive encouraging fans to bring non-perishable food items to the game.

The hope is to help fill the pantry at Operation Home front’s Albany headquarters for area military families.

Fans that bring food will be entered in a raffle for very cool prizes including concert tickets, baseball memorabilia and much more.

"Military Appreciation Night is a way for our fans and all those involved with the event to pay our respects, but it's also an opportunity to make a difference with military families in need," said Corvallis team president Dan Segel.

"We're celebrating freedom, sacrifice and Pioneer's anniversary. It's going to be an electric night that will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display," concluded Segel.

Contemporary country music star and Northwest native Taryn Cross is scheduled to sing the National Anthem and God Bless America.

Adding to the fun, the Oregon Army National Guard is setting up a rock wall outside of Goss Stadium for kids to climb and bringing a dog tag machine for fans to print their own custom tags at the game.

"Something fun like this is good for these kids," said the president of the Oregon Chapter of Operation Homefront Dale Clark. "We look at this as a mentoring opportunity, and another way to support our families."

Dan Seigal from the Corvallis Knights joined KGAL's live local talk show, Valley Talk to discuss this event on Tuesday, June 8th, at 11:06 am. If you missed the show listen online or download the mp3 podcast.

NewsTalk 1580 KGAL and Unforgettable 920 KSHO, leading Mid-Valley radio stations, is the presenting sponsor of Pioneer Telephone Military Appreciation & Fireworks Night.

Radio personality Ray Pitts of KGAL is scheduled to lead the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" during the 7th-inning stretch, Harry Caray style.

"KGAL is proud to be a part of an event like this that brings community together and shows support of our armed forces," said KGAL general manager Charlie Eads. "We are eager to promote both the food drive and the game."

The Corvallis Knights are donating 100 tickets to Operation Homefront to be distributed to area military families.

The team is also entertaining 20 select kids from military homes during its pre-game activities including playing catch during batting practice, eating in the clubhouse with the team, hanging in the dugout and being announced with the Knights.

The Knights are unveiling brand new camouflage jerseys that night that will be auctioned off to fans at the end of the season.

Single-game tickets are now on sale for Pioneer Telephone Military Appreciation & Fireworks Night presented by KGAL.

  • History of Valley Talk

Valley Talk was part of the new programming lineup on the new station at a frequency of 1580 KHz when it signed on in 1995. KGAL originally was at 930 KHz when it signed on December 10th, 1050. It later moved to 920 KHz until the call letters were dropped by the same (and current owners) when 920 KHz changed it's format to Adult Standards.

At that time KGAL AM's (920 KHz) programming (oldies) was moved to a new FM owned by Eads Broadcasting at 102.3 FM. This station was licensed to Brownsville had the call letters KGAL-FM. KGAL-FM was sold in the mid 1990's and a new frequency was applied for and approved at 1580 KHz, called KGAL. This time KGAL target was the same audience (35-64 Adults) that grew up with the original Top 40 Format in the 1960's, 70's and early 80's but were now listening to News Talk radio.

Valley Talk originally aired from 8:30 am to 9:00 Monday - Friday mornings following the Morning Update. Host Dick Manning launched the show and did the daily live and local talk show duties until shifting to part time host in early 2003 due to health reasons. Dick remained on the air sharing the host duties with Jim Willhight until his death in July of 2003.

Later in 2003 the show expanded to 1 full hour and moved to 11 to Noon, Monday- Thursday. On Dick Manning's passing in July 2003 Radio Ray and Jim Willhight split the Valley Talk live hosting duties. In July of 2004 Valley Talk began Podcasting, archiving shows in the mp3 format for free download on the internet.

KGAL had a special satellite studio in Albany (our main studios and transmitters are in Lebanon) built in the Flynn Building on First Avenue in Historic Downtown Albany. The show broadcast from that location until a major fire in the Flynn Building still originating live from our Valley Talk Studio in the Flinn Building in Downtown Albany.

The studio remained in the Flynn Building after the fire, then was moved when the space was remodeled for retail space. The new location, just a stones throw away in the Venetian Theater right across the street.

In March of 2010 KGAL lost the lease for the studio as the owners of the Venetian, the Plainview Mennonite Church, needed the space for it’s ministries. We are currently broadcasting the live, local talk show from our main studios in Lebanon.
