Scam Just a typical money scam, the scammer will eventually want money to transfer your money. This is such an obvious scam. Check out the spelling in red, even the persons name is misspelled. Also never consider the fact if someone had $123m they would most likely have a business email not a free Yahoo email. "I have a new email address! You can now email me at: business_pro_posal@yahoo.com Proposel for transfer of $123m. If you are intrested writ me. You will be paid 15%. Phish: Doglas - BUSINESS PROPOSAL Really a good quality graphic was included, looked 100% like an eBay advert, but for several reasons it was clear this was a phish. The main reason is that eBay would never have a 1cent listing week. The major fake out is the spammers address and information at the bottom of the email. eBay 1 Cent Listing Week Dear eBay Member, I'd like to announce a special one-week 1¢ Listing Week Sale, Insertion fees for auction-style and Fixed Price format listings on eBay, eBay Motors (for non-vehicles listings). They are even known to offer contestants a freebie if they enter a poem. Many have minor requirements, including a maximum poem length of 20 lines. Additionally, unlike some contests, there is often no fee to enter. Contestants simply create their prose and drop it in the mail. Now comes the "good" news, and the meat of the poetry scam: "Congratulations! You've become a semi-finalist," your letter says. Pride fills your soul. The letter goes on. "We wish to publish your poem in an anthology." You're going to be published! Now your heart is pounding with excitement. Until you read this next line... "To have a copy of this anthology, please send $49.95 plus $4.95 shipping and handling. For an additional $20 we can add your biography to your poem." The poetry scam list of offerings continues. You can have your poem mounted on a plaque. You can purchase cassette tapes where a professional reader has recorded your poem. You can even join an association of poets -- for a fee. The poetry scam may even go so far as to state that you have been nominated for the 'Poet of the Year'. With this nomination, you are invited to attend an award ceremony for the price of $475 plus travel expenses. And this is how the scammers make their money. Interesting situation, we got a call to the scambusters hotline, it seems they are trying to use us as a scam, someone opened up an account at Blockbuster in Wash State using the hotline. I received a voice mail that if I don't return all the game equipment by x-date I will be charged full value for the equipment. We called blockbuster and they removed my number, but it shows how fast people try to take advantage of someone. The issue is that Blockbuster took the information without verifying the users identity. Keep an ear out in case this happens to you. Local Residents Scammed: Seems a local listener had issues with a family member and the Grandparents Scam we talked about during our Top 10 countdown of scams for 2006. Here is a copy of the email we received.. any personal data has been removed for confidentiality. My mother who is 85 was just scammed by the grandparents phone scam. She wired $8,600 over three days to Vancouver thinking she was helping my son get home for Christmas and out of a jam. We are going to report it to the police, but is there anything else we should do?. We recommended they contact the Attorney General in the two states involved, we gave them that contact info. Please always remember to never click on unsolicited links in emails. Even if the link seems clear cut and direct to the site, the link most likely is a script or hidden URL to take you to a fake site, a duplicate of the real site. Every Bank and every quality company would never ask for your personal information online through an email, nor would they send you to a link or site for that information. Always go direct to the site on your own by typing the URL in the browser or contact your bank in person. Nigerian Scam w/ Twist: The common Nigerian Scam with a twist, as this one came through the US Mail service. A bank client was taking out small money orders $25 / $50 / $100 and sending them overseas in prep to collect a fortune coming out of African nation usually from a Deposed Dictator or Prince / King. Very well known scam, please watch out for this one, it is common and expensive. Overpayment Scams: Also a very common scam, mostly because it works so very often. Scam is simple, someone will ask you to cash a check and keep some money and send the balance back to them, usually by wire transfer or money order or even cash via FedEx. It can also come in the form of a payment for an item or also see our top 10 showing the Rental scam. You will get a company check usually from a well known famous company. They will claim it is their expense check or payroll check or something, want you to take your money out of the check and of course send the balance back to them, using the same methods as above. The results are the same, you will lose whatever money you send them, as well as the merchandise you may have sent as the check or MO is a total fake.
