Joining Valley Talk Host Jim Willhight from Peak Internet was Michael, Chris and Bobby to discuss eCommerce. Here is an outline of the show:
- What is it?
- Commerce over the web . electronically. Credit card or other transactions over the web.
-
- Examples: Amazon.com, barns and noble, or smaller sites like Bo-Macks or Oregon Festivals
|
What does it take to make happen:
- Hosted- Using other provider to manage your commerce. Managed by third party. Per product or monthly fee.
- Advantages: Less responsibility, easier to setup, no SSL required, off -site transactions. Allows you to use other services from the provider, such as referrals or cross sales tools.
-
Examples: Amazon affiliate selling, Google Checkout, paypal, Shopsite,
others
- Disadvantages: Fees, loss of control, lose some site identity at storefront step.
- How would you setup? Website forms or other site plug-in is only step.
- Do-It yourself. End-to-end control over ecommerce process. You manage the site, SSL, Authorization/payment gateway, and cart functionality.
- Advantages: Control over process of ecommerce, keep constant brand on site, able to change instantly, edit functionality. Smaller fee per transaction.
- Disadvantages: You are responsible for security and authorization of site. Lose added functionality that may come with a hosted provider. Larger upfront costs to get started.
- Setup: Create custom or download and setup ecommerce software. Setup SSL on site. Tie ecommerce software to payment gateway.
|
|
Other requirements:
- Website and hosting provider!
Why go ecommerce?
- Take your retail business global with small setup
