In the late 19th- and early 20th century, the most exciting event of summer, especially in small communities, was the Chautauqua Assembly. Combining elements of education, religion, athletics, and camping, the annual Chautauqua gathering promised something "uplifting" for everyone. Whole towns moved--literally--into the biggest city park or other appropriate space, and spent a week or so camping, listening to lectures, attending classes, participating in baseball or tennis tournaments, and generally engaging in self-improvement activities.
In this spirit, the Albany Regional Museum is proud to celebrate 25 years of service by presenting a Chautauqua evening. On Friday, July 29, 2005, the Museum will host a Chautauqua event at the Albany Senior Center. Tim McNeil, a historian and professional "re-enactor," will portray Meriwether Lewis in a presentation titled "Captain Meriwether Lewis: the Letters Home," based on the journals kept by the Corp of Discovery and letters that Captain Lewis wrote to his mother.
Tickets are now on sale at the Museum for McNeil's talk and the catered dinner which will precede it. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., July 29, with dinner at 6:45 p.m. and McNeil's program at 8:00 p.m. There is room for 190 people at the event.
The cost for non-members is $12.50. Museum members tickets are $8.50 and for museum patrons, they are $5. Tickets can be purchased at the Museum, 136 Lyon St. S.W. For more information, call 967-7122.
McNeil will "become" Captain Meriwether Lewis, using period costume and surrounded by supplies and tools comparable to those used on the Lewis and Clark journey. McNeil combines his skills as a woodworker and canoeist and his interest in history and the outdoors to give him a perspective on Lewis' life. He will reminisce about the beauty, excitement and adventures over the last few months of the 33-member Corps of Discovery's joourney. A question and answer period will follow.
Please join Museum supporters in celebrating our silver anniversary!

We have changed the traditional Chamber Choir Home Concert to The President's Concert to highlight an endowment that has been set-up by Beth and Ed Ray to support students studying choral music. Several years ago, the 1978 OSU Choir had a 25th year reunion. The choir had developed a long term relationship as the result of an extended international tour the group had taken. At the reunion, the choir voted to raise money to commission a significant new work of choral music by the internationally respected composer Libby Larsen. They were successful in their fundraising and Libby Larsen agree to write a set of six pieces entitled "I Dream of Peace." The text were children's poetry by children of the former Yugoslavia published by UNICEF. The world premiere for what we hope will become important pieces in the repertoire will be on June 4th. In conjunction, we also plan to have an art show entitled "Children from Behind the Wire." The collection includes about 40 pieces by children from war torn areas of the world. The pieces have turned out to be terrific. They are a stark and passionate setting of these simple children's poems that focus on the terrible affect of war on children. They will offer the listener a very powerful experience. They are set for choir and percussion. The percussion will be done by Robert Brudvig, percussion professor at OSU. The concert will also include a great deal of other music in many styles that will be enjoyable to many music lovers. Of particular interest will be a final performance of Michael Coolin's "In the Beginning" for choir, percussion, piano, speaking soloists, cosmic sounds, and multimedia.
