Portland Opera's Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel

The Portland Opera production of Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel is coming to Lebanon on Saturday, March 5, for a 10AM performance at the newly renovated Lebanon High School Auditorium.

Each year, Portland Opera tours Oregon and Southwest Washington with its touring arm, Portland Opera Works! Bringing together some of the best talent the Northwest has to offer, Portland Opera Works delivers lively, colorful adaptations of great operas designed to delight and inspire children of all ages. Past productions have included Cinderella, An American Magic Flute, Mystery at the Opera and La Bohème.

The Hansel and Gretel production is a fast-paced, 50-minute version of Humperdinck's lavish fairy-tale opera and is a feast for the eyes and ears. Its familiar story, luscious music and vibrant staging are designed to grab students' attention and enliven anyone's arts curriculum. Hansel and Gretel is a terrific way to introduce the dazzling world of opera to the young and young at heart! Designed for kindergarten through sixth grade, Portland Opera Works! Hansel and Gretel is sure to entertain and inspire, and it might just change some minds about opera.

Hansel and Gretel includes curriculum to help teachers prepare their students for the show and follow up on their operatic experience afterwards. This information plus a copy of the famous Lullaby for students to learn is available from Marla Gessford at the Lebanon School District Office, 451-8511 X 249. Teachers from any area district and private schools are encouraged to participate. Lebanon musician, choir director, vocalist and retired educator Peter Butler will be visiting area schools to introduce this program and teach the students the Lullaby. A visit can be arranged by calling Marla Gessford. Mr. Butler will also serve as master of ceremonies at the performance.

There is a small admission charge of $5 for adults and $2 for students and children. All proceeds will go to the Lebanon High School Band for upkeep and purchase of musical instruments and purchase of music. Tickets will be available at the door and at ticket outlets two weeks before the performance. Presenter and sponsor of this event is KGAL/KSHO Radio. Other local sponsors include Stainthorp's Pianos and Musical Goods in Lebanon Minuteman Press of Albany. New sponsors coming on board are: Shop 'n Kart of Lebanon & Albany and Latimer Enterprises, Inc.

The Portland Opera has agreed to donate their services so expenses are minimal. Therefore, almost all the money from sponsorships and ticket sales will go to help the under funded band program. Interested supporters are encouraged to call Charlie Eads or Shelly Garrett at 451-5425 or 926-8683.

Support for this Portland Opera Works production is generously provided by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, Bill and Karen Early, Harold and Arlene Schnitzer, CARE Foundation, The Collins Foundation, The JELD-WEN Foundation, PacifiCorp Foundation for Learning, Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund, PGE Foundation, Mike and Tracey Clark, The Standard, Holiday Retirement Corp, Union Pacific Foundation and the Autzen Foundation.

LHS Band Director, Josh Head, is on the planning committee for this project and is involving his band students in various aspects of the production. "We hope that Lebanon and surrounding committees will turn out and support this wonderful program, and the band could sure use the financial help." Event Chair Charlie Eads comments "This is a great opportunity to enjoy a fun and exciting performance for the whole family and help out the band program at the same time." "We hope to see a packed house."
